The teaching staff of elementary and secondary public schools is going to be reduced this school year by 13,000 teachers because of the deep cuts in the number of substitute hires and because of the thousands of teachers who are considering retirement.
Nearly 6,000 will retire. The rest are alternates who will not be recruited and are around 7,000.
Apart from the teachers who will be redundant and remain out of school, there will be, according to the Ethnos journal, “several who will be transferred under the new law to places where there is need. This will result in many teachers and professors resigning, since they will not be able to meet the financial requirements away from their permanent residence.
From the new school year, elementary school teachers will also suffer a big blow, since they will not have significant changes in their employment status as their teaching hours will not be increased and any gaps arising will be covered by secondary school substitutes.
This school year there will also be 900 transfers from the secondary to primary education. There are now 87,000 teachers, while for the new school year 2013-14, it is estimated they will be reduced to 80,000.
