Greece Faces EU Court For Kiato Landfill

fyli_dump_390_2004Greece has been taken to Court by the EU Commission because of a  landfill in Kiato. Brussels seems to be really concerned about Greece’s inability to protect its citizens from the negative effects of badly treated waste in the Peloponnese region, ANSAmed reported.

Despite many previous warnings, the Kiato landfill is operating in breach of the EU waste and landfill legislation, posing health risks to people and the environment. Trying to actually push Greece to speed up its actions in this area, the Commission has decided to take Greece to the EU Court of Justice.

In order to prevent undesired effects on human health, water, soil and air, the Landfill Directive has imposed stringent technical landfill requirements. According to ANSAmed, several on-site inspections have shown that there is no more space left at the Kiato landfill, but that it continues to operate without a valid permit.
Even if the Greek authorities have recognized the problem and are making efforts to address it, necessary measures to clean up the landfill have still not been taken.
