Nana Mouskouri Honored In Quebec

imagesThe government of Quebec on May 29 honored internationally renowned singer Nana Mouskouri, who received the medal of the Order of Excellence of Quebec from Premier Pauline Marois, in a special ceremony in Quebec City.

The award of the highest distinction “constitutes the culmination of a long contribution to art, which touches the souls everywhere and stresses, among others, the universality of the Greek spirit,”the Consul General of Greece in Montreal, Thanos Kafopoulos, who was present at the award ceremony, told the Greek news agency ANA.

The Ambassador of Canada to Greece Robert Peck was also present at the ceremony and congratulated Mouskouri. “Nana Mouskouri brings the sounds and the joy of Greece in Quebec and in Canada, for more than five decades. Her longtime manager Sam Gesser, who is no longer among us, was Canadian, while her son and grandchildren are Canadian citizens and live in Montreal,” he added.

“As Canada and Greece celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, this honorary distinction comes as a result of the close relations between the beloved artist and the citizens of Quebec and generally of Canada,” he said.

The ceremony was also attended by the member of Quebec’s National Assembly Gerry Sklavounos, the President of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal Nikos Pagonis and other officials.
