Greece HIV Cases Spike

121911-_The data concerning new cases of  HIV infections among injecting drug users in Greece is shocking. According to the European Observatory on Drugs report, which was announced in Lisbon on May 28, there has been an increase in Greece more than anywhere else in Europe, and the situation can only be compared to that of Romania.
At the same time, the conclusion drawn for new hepatitis C infections, that have also greatly increased and constitute a serious public health problem not only in Greece, but throughout Europe, has spread great concern as well. According to ANA-MPA’s  relevant article, hepatitis C which is transmitted through the sharing of injections used by drug addicts has infected an 18-80% rate of users who do not seek medical help.
“The outbreak of the HIV / AIDS virus among injecting drug users, which appeared in late 2010, continued unabated throughout 2011 and 2012,” noted the scientific coordinator of the Greek University Mental Health Research, M. Terzidou. She also stressed that the economic crisis affects the manner of drug use as addicts seem to exchange their drug substances on a daily basis, depending on the price and the money available.
