Greek Museums Packing Them In

museum1Hit by constant protests and riots over austerity measures in 2012, Greeceā€™s museums saw a 2.8 percent drop in visitors, and a decline in revenues of 18.4 percent, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
However, a 15.2% increase was recorded in the number of visitors to Greek museums during January 2013 while revenues rose by 1.9%.
Most visitors chose the Acropolis Museum (34.7%), followed by National Archaeological Museum (15.4%), Delphi (4%), Ancient Olympia (1.2%), the Museum of Heraklion in Crete (0.9%), the Palace of the Knights in Rhodes (0.6%) and the Museum of Rhodes (0.2%), while 43% went to other museums around the country.
According to ELSTAT, the archaeological sites and monuments have seen an increase of their visitors by a good 34.5% along with an increased revenue that touched 30%.
Greeceā€™s museums and archaeological sites are among the most important draws for tourists but have been hampered by constant disruptions by workers angry over austerity measures.
