A 25-year-old man suspected of beating his 23-year-old girlfriend in Nea Makri, northeast of Athens, turned himself in to police on May 8, following her death the previous week from injuries she sustained and a warrant for his arrest had been issued.
Police said the suspect, whose name was not revealed, had called the victim, Fai Bachla, on her mobile phone a few minutes before she was found lying on the street.
He had been arrested in June last year for allegedly attacking a member of the Greek Communist Party at an electoral stand in Aghia Paraskevi, in northeastern Athens. The Communist Party alleged that the assailant was a member of far-right Golden Dawn. Bachla spent three weeks in the hospital following the attack near her home. Her parents decided to donate her organs.
Authorities said one of the blows she suffered turned out to be so grievous that it led to her death, as she reportedly struck her head on a car bumper and fell unconscious. The suspect claimed her death was an accident and that it stemmed from a quarrel.
