Stamoulis’ 404-Meter Vision Up In The Clouds

555collinsapril29flickerHarry Stamoulis, the Greek owner of Stamoulis Property Group, wants to build a 404-meter skyscraper at 555 Collins Street in Melbourne, as reported in Australian newspapers.

Plans for the new office tower have not yet been submitted to the Melbourne City Council, although Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle expressed his objections because, as he said, “The skyscraper will cast a shadow over the Yarra River and Southbank.”

“I can’t see us doing anything but opposing it,” Doyle said. He added, “The public has to have confidence in the planning scheme. If you keep breaching it, the public loses trust in it … This breaks the rules.”

Concerning the skyscraper that Stamoulis intends to build, Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, rushed to clarify that, “This is just a proposition. A proposition that will be discussed and on which the public’s opinion will be asked before any decision is made.”

Guy said that the proposed tower was “about 14 meters taller than the approved Australia 108 concept,” which at 388 meters would be 91 meters taller than the Eureka Tower. Both skyscrapers were designed by Greek architect Nonda Katsalidis.

If approved and built, 555 Collins tower would be Melbourne’s and the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest building.

The Stamoulis family owns Greek Media Group, which includes the Greek radio station 3XY and the Greek newspaper Ta Nea in Melbourne. The family owned Oxia, an island in the Ionian Sea, which was allegedly sold to an Emir of Qatar.
