Court Rejects AGET Heracles Request to Lay off Workers in Halkida

agetiraklis_390_2603Greek authorities have rejected a request made by AGET Heracles Cement Company, a subsidiary of Lafarge Group, to lay off its 229 workers in its plant in Halkida, in western Evia.
The Labor Ministry’s Supreme Labor Council turned down the Heracles Cement request, with five votes in favor and one against.
The court recommended to Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis not to approve the request.
The Halkida cement plant was shut down because of a plunge in domestic construction activity and the group’s inability to sell its surplus production to international markets due to low demand.
AGET Herakles has three cement plants in Greece – in Volos (mainland Greece) and in Halkida and Milaki (both in Evia). It has quarries in these areas and on Milos island.
