More Hours For Primary School Teachers

school_teacherIn an effort not to appoint substitute educators and save funds, the Greek government decided to make school teachers work two more hours per week from September on, which is the beginning of the new school year.
The strategy reduce the need for substitute teachers by 80 percent, officials said. In the coming school year, only 2,000 part-time educators are expected to work at the Greek public school, compared to 6,500 substitute teachers last year.
Teachers on the job for more than 12 years will have to work 20 hours per week. Those who are in schools between six and 12 years will have to work 21 hours per week and those with an experience of less than six years will spend 23 hours each week at school.
As far as teachers at private schools are concerned, they will have to decide whether to work two more hours or see their salary correspondingly cut. The teaching unions around Greece have already published protest announcements for the Ministry of Education’s plans.
