Farmers Protest Against Photovoltaic Systems Taxation

photovoltaicfarms.jpgeditedA protest rally outside the Environment and Energy Ministry was held by Greek farmers who have installed photovoltaic systems on their cultivations in order to boost their income. The farmers protested against excessive taxation on the photovoltaic systems.
The farmers had a meeting with Deputy Environment and Energy Minister, Asimakis Papageorgiou. They claimed that their investments are no longer profitable due to increased taxes and demands from banks that extended them loans they pay further interest on, as reported in the newspaper Kathimerini.
The leftist opposition party SYRIZA said, “The dream of investment in photovoltaic systems has turned out to be a nightmare.”
An announcement by SYRIZA reported that: “SYRIZA has submitted objections about the way that photovoltaic systems’ installation in productive agricultural land has been promoted by the then PASOK government, in priority and with alleged favorable terms for the farmers, creating prospects for a new Eldorado.”
As proved by the farmers’ mobilizations, this dream of investment was profitable only for photovoltaic solar panel manufacturers and banks, in contrast to the farmers, who are in danger of a complete economic disaster.
