Students Mark Cavafy’s Works In Istanbul

Kavafis_IstabulThe Scholastic Conference 150 Years K.P. Cavafy was organized by Zografio High School in Istanbul in collaboration with Mandoulides Schools in Thessaloniki, under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and took place in Istanbul from April 11-14.

Pupils from 13 junior and senior high schools in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Egypt, selected representatives of the literary world, writers and poets, musicians, actors and performers participated in it.

During the conference, scientists approached the subject of the relation of Cavafy’s poetry with the ancient world, Alexandria, Istanbul, Byzantine, love, history, politics, and symbols and examined the usage of his language.

The students, assisted by their teachers and special advisors, managed with their contributions and actions to externalize to the participants and observers their personal dialogues with the poet’s works, bringing questions and quest of youthfulness on the surface, a youthfulness that searches and agonizes over interpersonal relations and over what tomorrow may bring.

An art gallery displaying art inspired by Cavafy’s poetry by Eleftheria Stoikou opened at the Sismanogleio Megaro of Greece’s General Consulate.

The drama group of Mandoulides Schools presented the theatrical performance At Love’s Beckoning, based on Cavafy’s lyrics, directed by Eleni Dimopoulou. The song, For As Long As You Can, with Aris Davarakis; lyrics and composed by Evanthia Rempoutsika especially for the conference, was heard. Opportunities were offered for people from different cultures to meet.
