Sales Of Greek Art At Bonhams

FFB77CC6023256BB7CFCC235CA59812BA 64% (by value) and a 53% (by volume) of the works of Spring Greek Sale were sold during the April 24 auction of Bonhams held in London, an event that brought in 1.9 million euros ($2.48 million,) including monies earmarked for Greece Debt Free, a website soliciting donations to write down the country’s crushing debt.

Although some paintings remained unsold, the auction showed that paintings of a  high value can still be bought by many collectors, and can be preferred over other paintings of a lower estimates, analysts said.

The masterpiece of the auction was Autumn, by Giannis Tsarouhis (1910-89,) which is the painter’s piece with his favorite model Dominique given in a Renaissance atmosphere in the form of an ancient Greek god, which brought a bid of 318, 500 euros, about $416,318.

The second painting was The Emperor Constantine XI Palaeologus on the Walls of Constantinople, by Theofilos Hatzimihail, which was sold for 142,370 euros, almost $186,100. The third was Olympiacos Player With The Wings of Victory, by Tsarouhis (1910-1989), sold for 114,190 euros.

Two paintings by Alekos Fasianos also sold, including Desire, for 107,145 euros ($140,116) and Return From Troy, for 97,280 euros, or about $127,139. Terpsichore Angelopoulos of Art Expertise said that “in spite of the times, the Greek art market remains a solid value and a reliable investment option. We are also glad that the symbolic initiative taken by Hellenic German Education has been well received by the Greeks collectors.”
