Second Series of Euro Banknotes

230413182000_0574_jpegECB decided to issue a new series of banknotes under the name Europa, ranging from the international role of euro cash to technical aspects of the development of the Europa series and its enhanced security features.

According to Benoît Cœuré, a member of the ECB’s Executive Board, “The Euro system should remain ahead of the curve, and that is why we are launching the Europa series: to increase banknote security, take advantage of technological advances and maintain public confidence at high levels.”

In the new €5 banknotes of the Europa series that will start circulating on May 2, one can distinguish a slight change in colors which are more intense, the “emerald number” – a shiny 5 – which changes from emerald green to deep blue, the map of Europe now including Cyprus and Malta. The currency name will now be written (except for Latin and Greek characters) in Cyrillic as well, because of Bulgaria, and finally the shape of Europe will appear on the silver label.

When all the new banknotes are released, they will be circulating for some time along with the current ones- the first euro banknotes that were issued in January 2002, which will gradually be withdrawn.
