Campaign to Restore Olympias Trireme for the New ‘300’ Premiere

300px-Olympias.1Georgette Alithinos from Tampa, FL, has launched a fundraising campaign for the restoration of Trireme Olympias, the only one fully functioning in the modern world, at the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects Kickstarter.

The projects aims at restoring the Trireme and shooting a documentary film about its history and journey. Moreover, the organizers hope to be able to have the trireme ready for the premiere of 300: Rise of an Empire, a forthcoming 2013 action film directed by Noam Murro.

The current harsh financial times in Greece leave no room for supporting this rather big and expensive project, so that Greeks and everyone interested in history from around the world are asked to pledge any amount possible.

Launched on April 5th, the project will only be funded if at least $265,000 is pledged by Sunday May 5, the date the campaign ends. To donate for the project and express your support, visit Voyage of a Legend.

Olympias is the only standing detailed replica of an ancient Athenian trireme and an important example of experimental archaeology. It is also a commissioned ship in the Greek navy, the only commissioned vessel of its kind in any of the world’s navies.

She was constructed from 1985 to 1987 by a shipbuilder in Piraeus. The ship was built to drawings by the naval architect John F. Coates which he developed through long discussions with the historian J. S. Morrison following the longest correspondence on any subject in The Times of London in the early 1980’s.
