Greece Plans Financial Crimes Prisons

X-Greek-PrisonsGreeceā€™s Ministry of Justice is looking over military camps to house people convicted of financial crimes, Deputy Minister Kostas Karagounis told Parliament.
Speaking about overcrowding in Greek jails, he said that the government wants to transfer those already jailed and who are serving sentences up to two years to facilities in rural areas until new jails can be built. ā€œWe are looking for a military camp within Attica so that it can be transformed suitably and those people can go there and have human living conditions.ā€
He also reported that 67 percent of the people in jail are foreigners. ā€œIf we didnā€™t have them then the prisons would be more than enough for Greek convicts,ā€ and he continued that negotiations are ongoing with Albania to transfer Albanians in Greek jails back to their home country to serve their sentences.
It was previously discussed in the office of Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis that, ā€œThis is something that will happen immediately,itā€™s not something we are saying just for the sake of saying.ā€ It was explained that in the same space prisoners convicted of low-level crimes will also be held and have sentences less than two years. The ministryā€™s goal is to segregate financial criminals together and keep them out of the population of those convicted of more serious crimes.
ā€œWeā€™re not talking about concentration camps,ā€ Karagounis clarified. Talking to reporters in Parliament, he said that the ministry wants different structures for the financial criminals to be held in temporarily.Ā  He noted that, ā€œOur basic priorities for decongesting jails is electronic bracelets,ā€ and said until the rural jails are finished the government is looking for camps.
