Prime Minister Gillard Supports Cyprus

images“Australia stands unwaveringly by the Cypriot Republic,” said Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia and leader of the Australian Labor Party, during a celebration in Melbourne to mark its holding of the rotating European Union Presidency in the last half of 2012.

Talking about the bilateral relations, Gillard stressed that Australia stands solidly behind Cyprus during its burgeoning economic crisis. “We have a strong relation with Cyprus, founded on mutual respect as well as on our belief that peace and justice will prevail on the island”.

At the meeting of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus- (PSEKA) the commemorative events for July were discussed. The Cypriot communities around Australia organize such events to remember the Turkish invasion on the island in 1974 and the illegal occupation of the 37 percent of the island’s territory and the continuing violation of human rights according to UN and the Security Council’s resolutions. The planning of the commemorative events of July in Victoria was the main subject of the meeting.

PSEKA President Costas Prokopiou, said: “With this celebration we showed to all that the economic crisis has not defeated us, on the contrary, Cyprus and the Cypriot people have the forces and the willingness to cope with the difficulties and to go back to its financial prosperity which characterized it”.
