Tables In Athens' Squares Like Old Times

trapezakiaIn a bid to revive life into the city, Athens is going to allow chairs, tables and umbrellas in squares to help restaurants and businesses get customers and improve the aesthetics of the areas.

That includes Omonia, a haven for immigrants, drug users, criminals and which has deteriorated into a dirty, grimy concrete plaza filled with constant traffic and inhospitable to pedestrians, shoppers and diners.
Other areas which the city hopes to transform include Victoria Square, and Kotzia Square outside City Hall with the aim of making them meeting places for entertainment, concerts, games, cultural events and other uses. The city also plans to add benches and create desperately-needed green spaces to soften the concrete jungle settings.
Officials said that he squares will have uniform separating aluminum constructions and glass grids, while parametrically there will be metal containers with flowers. Umbrellas will have specific dimensions for all the squares. They will be monochrome or striped and white or shades of yellow will be one of the colors, in order to ensure maximum brightness, while the cloths will be prohibited to have advertising messages.
The cafés and restaurants must have uniform tables both in indoor and outdoor spaces and are prohibited from using plastic chairs and tables. However, wooden flooring of deck type can be used in squares, with specific requirements concerning the quality and the dimensions, while the areas must be accessible for people with disabilities.
City inspectors will check for electrical and other technical connections to make sure they meet codes and officials said licensing procedures will be streamlined with a 15-day limit for approval.
