Young Immigrants’ Hardship Stories Pile Up

prosfigasYoung immigrants who leave their countries seeking a better future in Europe narrate their stories in the magazine Griot published in Rome, Italy, which concern mainly their arrival in Greece.
Among other experiences, the children describe how they are treated by the police: “They abandon us out of Patras without shoes; they destroy everything burning our tents, blankets, clothes and food. Many were those who returned after hours or days with their face and body swollen from beating and others entered the hospital.”
An eleven-year-old boy described the situation during wintertime: “In winter, policemen force us to stand for at least half an hour in the cold water with all our clothes on.”
A young immigrant from Afghanistan reported that he worked in Corfu collecting oranges, nine hours per day for €15, and at the end of the season worked in the woods cutting trees from seven in the morning to six in the evening for €15, two or three days per week. He said he was thinking of returning to his country.
The children describe the conditions during their detention in Greek prisons. According to their testimonies, prison guards, as well as other prisoners beat them and torture them by putting out cigarettes on their bodies. They say that they were having two meals per day, but were obliged to sign on paper that they were having three.
These and other stories of hardship of young immigrants can be found in the UN Refugee Agency’s website 1againstracism.gr.
