First European National Tourism Observatory in Greece

8F0F3D97AEEE36E123EA34D031499F4COn March 27, the Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefaloyianni during the 55th session of the Organization’s Committee in Europe, signed a cooperation memorandum for the establishment of a National Tourism Observatory, regarding the sustainable development of tourism, with the secretary general of the UN’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Taleb Rifai, in Izmir.
During the Committee’s session, whose presidency is being exercised by Greece, Turkish tourist sector representatives signed a commitment concerning international moral values in the sector of tourism.
The Observatory, is the first tourism observatory in Europe under the auspices of UNWTO. It will monitor the effects that tourism products have on the financial, social and natural environment and will generally contribute to the development of cooperation within the context of sustainable tourism.
As the Greek minister highlighted, “We believe that the appropriate utilization of the National Observatory will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of the country’s tourism products”, while adding that “Tourism and the environment are interrelated concepts, the development of tourism depends directly on the environment. For us, the relationship between tourism and the environment is our first priority.”
