The Russians Are Coming! – To Crete

creteWhile Cyprus is ready to confiscate much of the bank deposits of rich Russians among others to get an international bailout to save its economy, the island of Crete is having success wooing Russian visitors.
The promotion of Crete in Russia brought positive results, according to several Cretan tourism organizations who participated h an organized pavilion at the tourism fair held in Moscow, called MITT 2013.
The presence of Crete in Russia was reported in several statements made by the President of Travel Agents in Crete,  Michalis Vlatakis, as well as the President of the Hoteliers Association Manolis Halkiadakis, who also confirmed the estimations for expected increase of the tourist wave from Russia to Crete and Greece up to 30%.
The Cretan mission had a series of meetings with tourism personalities, the Russian media and local clergy. The pavilion of the Region of Crete attracted leading figures of the international tourism market as well as other visitors of the fair.
The pavilion of the Cretan Region was visited by the Secretary General of Tourism Anastasios Liaskos, the Ambassador and the Consul of Greece, the Secretary General of GNTO and staff of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) office in Moscow.
The head of the mission, the Vice-Governor of Crete Euripides Koukiadakis also had the opportunity, along with Vlatakis and Halkiadakis, to meet with the Bishop of Moscow and other representatives who told them about the interest of Russians for the island of Crete, Greece and especially pilgrim tourism.
