The application of the education restructuring plan Athena will reduce departments and Technological Educational Institutes (TEI) in Greece to 405, compared to 534 there are now.
The number of departments to be closed or merged is 129. Twenty six departments will only be open until students first registered in 2012-2013 have graduated. Five institutions are the ones to be affected by the  mergers-closures.
In the final Athena plan, foreign literature schools will not constitute one department. The number of students that will have to move from one city to another for studies will be the smallest possible to minimize the financial burden put on families.
The Minister of Education, Constantine Arvanitopoulos said: “In order to upgrade public Higher Education we take today a decisive step towards the correction of mistakes of the past we are all aware of”.
