Theodorakis In Hospital, Breathing Problems

TheodorakisNoted composer Mikis Theodorakis, who scored the music for the films Zorba the Greek and Serpico, and was imprisoned by the right-wing junta that ruled Greece from 1967-74 has been admitted to a hospital in Athens with respiratory problems, doctors said on March 16.
Theodorakis was under observation and suffering from a lung infection, officials at the Athens Medical Center said. The 87-year-old is known internationally for creating symphonic compositions around poetry from Greece and other countries including the masterpiece Axion Esti based on the poetry of Nobel Laureate Odysseas Elytis, and has been politically active both for leftist parties and the right-wing New Democracy Conservatives.
When the military colonels took power, Theodorakis founded the rebel group the Patriotic Front. His music was banned during their rule and he was both put in jail and exile with his family until an international outcry got him freed, allowing him to move to France until the dictatorship fell. In recent years, he has been an outspoken critic of the austerity measures imposed on Greece by international lenders.
