If you’re looking for last minute ideas on how to spend Valentine’s Day with your agapi, here’s a few films we suggest that will set the scene for a night of love, featuring either beautiful Mediterranean scenery, or Greek actors that bring a sparkle of romance to the screen:
The iconic romantic comedy stars Nia Vardalos planning her very Greek wedding to a non-Greek who, while learning new customs, also spends a lot of funny moments getting her family to embrace him, all in the name of love.
An Italian officer discovers the beauty of Greece during their occupation in the war, and ends up falling for a local woman. The film was shot all over Kefalonia, and is famous for its cinematography and gorgeous landscape views of the area.
As a young woman prepares for her wedding on a beautiful Greek island, she learns her father could be one of three men. The bride invites her mother without telling her that she’s also invited all three of the men to the wedding. With songs from ABBA and scenery provided courtesy of Skiathos and Skopelos, “Mamma Mia” is a sweet combination of music and romance set on the Greek isles.
Moonstruck
No beautiful beaches or Mediterranean scenery here, but Olympia Dukakis’ Academy Award winning performance is worthy of a little extra love this Valentine’s Day. The film, about a woman named Loretta (Cher) from Brooklyn who falls for the brother of the man she’s supposed to marry, stars Dukakis as her feisty mother…and she has more than a few opinions on romance.
Another romantic comedy featuring Nia Vardalos, in which she stars as a Greek-American tour guide in Greece who ends up falling for her bus driver, played by Alexis Georgoulis.
