Greek-Australians Raise $1M For Greece

kivotos kosmouHoping to help Greeks struggling through a crushing economic crisis that has pushed 20 percent of them into poverty and created a record 26.8 percent unemployment, Australia’s Greeks are donating more than 1 million in Australian dollars.

Since the financial crisis erupted in Greece, many of the events organized by Greeks in the Australia Diaspora and their organizations of Australia have had a character of charity.

AHEPA organized an event held in a coastal region of Melbourne and managed to raise $32,000 dollars to support the organization Ark of the World which cares for children that have been abandoned or victims of racism and social exclusion in the poor Athens neighborhood of Kolonos at the Platonos Academy.

It was founded in 1998 by Father Antonios Papanikolaou, who was 26 at the time, and said he had a vision to constitute a point of care, support and hope for a prosperous future of these children, the children of “another” Athens.

The 150 Greek children there along with children from Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ghana, Afghanistan and Iraq, experience harmoniously the affection and peace of the Ark that relieves them from poverty, hunger, illnesses, misery, exploitation and illiteracy. The organization of Thessalonians of Melbourne, The White Tower Association, raised $4,000 for the Hippokration Hospital of Thessaloniki.
