No Metro And Electric Railway on New Year's Day

A4756C2BEE70880C1A6F623AA2506F6DWorkers on the Athens metro and Kifissia-Piraeus electric railway (ISAP) stepped up their dispute with the government Dec. 27, by announcing a 24-hour strike on New Year’s Day.
The unions representing the public transport employees oppose further cuts to their members’ wages.
Employees are reacting to their inclusion in the single payroll and warn that if the government’s decision is implemented, they will work with a public sector timetable from the beginning of January, that is from 8 a.m to 4 p.m.
In a statement they said that since the government is treating the public transport system as just another part of the civil service, workers would operate like civil servants and observe January 1 as a public holiday.
As a result, Athenian urban passengers will spend their New Year’s day without the metro and the electric rail.
Authorities were due to launch a scheme to discourage fare dodging on New Year’s Day, by offering one free ticket with the purchase of a block of 10 90-minute tickets for 14 euros.
