Dear Santa: I Want A Job For My Dad

dear_santaGreek children who send many thousands of letters to Santa Claus don’t know their wish lists wind up at the Greek post office ELTA. Their outpourings are funny but sweet and sad sometimes too, especially those from the young who say they don’t want anything for themselves, but just a job for their parents.
Greece’s crushing economic crisis has left nearly two million people out of work and many families with enough to provide even daily survival needs, let alone Christmas, making some of this this year’s letters all the more heart-rending. Mixed in with the usual requests for toys are those for Santa to be generous to struggling parents too.
This year their letters are being answered by a favorite hero of many, Eugenionas Trivizas’ cat creation named Pis-Fis. With so much misery during this year’s holidays afflicting so many, ELTA this year continued to insure the children get answers to their letters, returning some smiles too, even if the magic has gone out of Christmas for them.
Last year some 100,000 letters were sent to Santa by Greece’s children but this year they sent 7,000 in one day as the season began. ELTA’s press spokeswoman, Eleni Kondou, told the website Newsit, “This year we even got a letter from a little Chinese kid living in Greece, in English. They ask how their favorite saint, who has some extra pounds, can fit in the chimney.”
