Greek Artists Inspired by Economic Crisis

artArtists in Greece are fighting back against cuts to arts funding, as the country struggles to solve its debt crisis and impose tough austerity measures.

Difficulties and lack of money have inspired young people who represent various arts. Journalist Mark Lowen met talented young Greek artists whose work goes against the debt crisis.

He visited Athens and followed street artist Bleeps around the city.  Bleeps said:“ The financial crisis was a stimulation for me and gave me the opportunity to get inspired. If the crisis did not exist, my work would be unobserved, my art would be like a voice in a desert.”

Lowen met Sofia Pashou, Director of 10 Centimetres Up. Pashou expressed her willingness to return to Greece because of the crisis in order to create something new.

Lowen discussed with the singer of the music band Psychodrama, George Siatitsas, who talked about his music which expresses people’s anger today. Lowen comments that hip hop music is the music of the crisis.
