Greek Farm Workers Strike Again

Greek farmers, many taking to the streets in tractors, protested again against new tax regulations they said would hurt their businesses. Farmers in Karditsa held a rally in their city’s center.
Larissa’s farmers have organized a rally for Dec. 8 to demonstrate against what they said are the government’s anti-farm measures as part of an agreement to mollify international lenders putting up bailouts.
Farmers complained that, “Tax hikes of any kind, large increases in PPC (electric company0 bills and ELGA premiums at the same moment that pension is reduced and health services level has reached the bottom, the increasing production cost in conjunction with low product prices lead farmers to poverty and destitution…. having to deal with such attacks, the only answer is to fight for our rights all together. We demand immediate solutions to our problems and any brutal attack concerning our lives and survival is ending here.”
They were ignored, just the same as all other protesters have been during 2 1/2 years of punishing pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions, although more strikes and protests by labor unions are being planned against another $17.45 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes.
