Robbers Escape Athens Police Chase

A massive police operation was underway in a forest area of Krioneri on Dec. 7 to find four foreigners suspected of breaking into a residence in Nea Erithraia. More than 100 police officers were involved, aided by a helicopter and the anti-terrorist team.
Police said they believe that the gunmen were not far from the scene.  According to early reports, officers exchanged fire with the perpetrators. However, the four armed robbers managed to escape by stealing publisher and journalist Makis Triantafillopoulos’ car and exchanged gunfire during a wild chase.
It all started in a house in Nea Erithrea, where police said the four gunmen broke in at 3:30 in the morning and grabbed a bag of money. The owners realized it and immediately called the police.
A short distance away, a Greek Police patrol car came upon the suspects’ car. Police said they were shot at and returned fire, then gave chase as other police hurried to the scene.
The robbers abandoned their car in Ekali, stopped Triantafyllopoulos who was passing through, took his car by force and tried to escape. At the end of Krioneri Avenue the car overturned and fell into a ravine. The four gunmen abandoned it and disappeared into the dark, police said.
