Musician Tasos Sophopoulos Passes Away

Tasos Sophopoulos, one of Greece’sgreatest musicians, who immigrated to America in the 1950’s, passed away at 78 years old, on Nov. 18.  orn in Petralona, Athens, in 1934, he was a great bouzouki player from an early age. He played in many music scenes in Athens and other areas around the capital.
He migrated to America, taking his talent there, after being the opportunity to work with Markos Vamvakaris, the “Patriarch” of the rebetiko.
Sophopoulos traveled across the USA: San Fransisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York and Hawaii and also went to Canada, entertaining Greek immigrants and other fans, and played together with many distinguished musicians from various music traditions.
In the beginning of the 1990’s, he returned to Greece, choosing to live a lonely life and staying out of the public eye and performing inn small taverns for people who liked rebetiko. His favorite place was Metaxoi tavern, where he was played with Tolis Harmas.
