Flame Lighting Ceremony at Marathon Tomb

The Marathon Flame was lit earlier today in a simple ceremony at the archaeological site of the Marathon Tomb. Despite the cold and the heavy rain, the gathered audience was impressed by the theatrical presentation from Euripides’ work “Ιraclides”.
The flame was lit in the altar by Leonidas Antonopoulos, who gave the torch to Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. The smiling composer passed on the holy flame to two young torchbearers and then on to the golden Marathon runner of Seoul Rosa Mota from Portugal.
SEGAS President Kostas Panagopoulos, president of AIMS Paco Borao, Mayor of Marathon-Nea Makri Iordanis Louizos and the GNTO general secretary Nikos Karachalios attended the ceremony and held their speeches praising the organization of the Marathon run and asking for more similar events of massive athletism to take place in Greece.
The Marathon will commence on Sunday and Patrick Makau Musyoki from Kenya who holds the world record in Marathon time will start the event.
