Greek-Australian Ambassadors for Australia Day

Three prominent Greek Australians, George Donikian, Mike Zafiropoulos and George Lekakis, have been named  members of the new Australia Day Committee (Victoria), officially launched this week by Multicultural Arts Victoria Chair Stefan Romaniw and Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu.

The three have been designated Victoria’s 2013 Australia Day Ambassadors representing the Greek Australian community as part of the multicultural and diverse state of Victoria. Baillieu said the committee will help celebrate Australia’s assets and its support for liberty.

During a reception for Victoria’s 2013 Australia Day Ambassadors at RACV, Baillieu stated that, “What separates Australia Day from other national days is the fact that Australians are at liberty to do what they want to do, to do what they love to do, and that liberty is embedded in the history of this country”.

Romaniw said the committee would focus on celebrating the youth and diversity that contribute in making Victoria unique. “Our state is a youthful, multicultural and harmonious society which enjoys the benefits of mutual respect between all people, it’s the envy of the world and it needs to be celebrated,” he said.
