HANAC Celebrates 40 Years of Public Service

The 40th Anniversary Black Tie HANAC Dinner Dance Celebration was held on Oct. 26 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Manhattan, honoring the humanitarian work of the Order of Saint Andrew and its Commander, Dr. Anthony Limberakis, who was presented with the award Man of the Year 2012.

The Hellenic-American multi-faceted social services organization also celebrated the 40 years from its establishment in 1972 by the late George Douris, whose surviving wife Evangelina Douris is the current president.

“Dr. Limberakis and the Order of the Archons are being praised for their dedication and restless struggle to promote human rights and religious freedom across the world,” Douris said, adding that both her grandfather and her husband would be proud of her for honoring the Archons for their humanitarian work and committment to work toward re-opening the Theological School of Halki.

Although HANAC began as a means to assist the large number of immigrants that were settling in the Astoria community of Queens, it is now serving the needs of vulnerable populations throughout New York City. Its primar mission is to develop and administer the operation of essential social services including youth, senior and immigrant services, employment and education programs, counseling and affordable housing for the betterment of the community.

According to the official website of HANAC, the organization presently sponsors more than 40 programs located in 12 sites in four boroughs, serving more than 25,000 clients annually.
