Greece’s police have yet again been accused of racism and anti-immigrant behavior, this time by the BBC, which reported on alleged torture of anti-fascist detainees inside a police department in the Attica region.
The BBC cited doctors reports which it said confirmed “grievous bodily harm caused by a sharp and blunt object,” requiring the victim to be off work for a month.
Reports from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR,) NGO’s and lawyers who represent the legal rights of asylum seekers in Greece have said that some police are working with the anti-immigrant, far-right extremist neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in going after immigrants. The police do not record the attacks, critics said.
Other reports have detailed arbitrary violence, mistreatment, etc of people in the asylum queue concluding that, “Access to the asylum procedure is almost impossible in Attica.” According to the BBC, while Greece signed the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights which allow immigrants to seek asylum and guarantees them humane treatment, that Greek police some times violate this and that as few as one in 10,000 petitioners get asylum, a procedure controlled by the police.
