N.J. Teen Helps Raise $80,000 for Greek Children

Thanks to Christina Leventis, a Tenafly, N.J. High School graduate, some $80,000 has been collected to help benefit children in Greece during the country’s crushing economic crisis. The New York-based newspaper Ethnikos Kyrix reported that Leventis, along with her classmates, wanted to do something to help Greece.

The money was raised during a gathering at the community center of the Cathedral at the Church of the Holy Trinity Manhattan and will be given to the non-profit, charitable organization, Make-A-Wish Greece, subsidiary of the Organization Make-A-Wish International, founded in 1997. Leventis contacted the groups and then sent hundreds of emails and made phone calls to raise the funds and get support.

Two friends of hers, Mariella Frigkrouaisn and Sarah Ratner, came to the event to support her and said they were proud of her initiative. Ratner said she has visited some Greek islands while her friend says she also wants to go. Leventis spoke with compassion and love for Greece and for what she observed during her visit there. She said she recalled that despite their misery, Greeks were striving.
