Glezos Urges Diaspora to Help Greece

Manolis Glezos, a Member of Parliament from the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) and a hero remembered for pulling down the Nazi swastika from the Acropolis in 1941, with the aid of his friend, Apostolos Santas, has asked Greeks of the Diaspora to help their countrymen get through a crushing economic crisis.
“Deepening poverty, increasing rates of suicides, high unemployment’s levels. The government ignores all these financial and living troubles occurring in peoples’ lives, negotiating the measures which make financial crisis in Greece deteriorating. If reforms are not undertaken, Greece is bound to default and the crisis to deepen,” said Glezos, referring to Greece’s bowing to demands of international lenders to keep administering pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions.
Glezos said, “These critical moments require me to turn to another Greece, the Greater Greece beyond our borders Greece, and ask for their support -substantial support – in order to reverse our course, which with mathematical certainty, leads to disaster. We appeal, therefore, and call on Greeks wherever they are, to once again stand by our side and influence the governments of countries where they live, in order to exercise the necessary political will to enable Greece to emerge from the crisis and to make a substantial recovery. ”
A few efforts have been announced for the Diaspora to assist Greece, and there have been donations of aid and medical supplies directed to hospitals and Greeks suffering from the crisis, but there has otherwise been little attention given Greece by those whose homeland it is.
