Australian Press’s Coverage of Asia Minor Catastrophe

Since November 1912 Australian journalists were aware of the imminent uprooting of Hellenism in Asia Minor.

This new information was found in newspaper reports presented by university professor of Greek descent, Panagiotis Diamantis in his lecture: How Australian journalists were informed of Macedonia’s liberation. Diamantis noticed that the Australian correspondent, Martin Donohoe attended the battle front, in West Macedonia as well as in the battles of Sarandaporo and Giannitsa. In his reports, though, he noticed that the liberation of these regions would lead to adverse repercussions for Christians under Turkish rule.

The lecture was part of the event marking the 100th anniversary of the Liberation of  Thessaloniki and West Macedonia, in cooperation with AHEPA’s National Convention and the Hellenic Open University of Sydney.
