Thessaloniki Mayor Giannis Boutaris was chosen as the world’s best mayor for the month of October in an online poll of City Mayors.com, a website that had ranked previously New York’s and London’s mayors the best for other months.
“If all Greek politicians were like the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece would not be in the economic and financial mess it is in today”, German newspapers commented after Boutaris visited Berlin in February.
According to CityMayors.com, he told reporters that his country’s economic crisis helped him change attitudes in his city. “Since there is no money to buy votes, politicians actually have to produce results.”
