Celebrating 175 years from the birth of the unconventional Elizabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, the Imperial Furniture Collection Hofmobiliendepot in Vienna will be hosting the temporary exhibition Sissy on Corfu: The Empress and the Achilleion from Sept. 26 to Jan. 27.
The exhibition focuses on Elisabeth’s love of Greece, and most particularly of the island of Corfu and its people, language and culture. The many blows in the Empress’s life and her weak health brought her in 1890 to Corfu, where she decided to build a summer palace amidst the greenery of Gastouri, now the municipality of Achilleion, about ten kilometers to the south of the city of Corfu. The palace was designed with the mythical hero Achilles as its central theme.
The exhibition showcases authentic pieces of art from Elizabeth’s summer palace, furniture, collections, utensils and clothing permanently presented in Achilleion, as well as theme wings presenting the Empress’s journeys and everyday life and the palace construction and history.
Greek Ambassador to Vienna, Themistocles Dimidis inaugurated the exhibition before dozens of delegates of Viennese artists, public officials and members of the Greek community and noted the spirit of philhellenism that characterized the beautiful Austrian queen.
