Karidis Says More Immigration Can Save Australia

Gerasimos Karidis

One of Australia’s most successful construction company owners, Gerasimos Karidis, said the country will have to rely on immigration to raise its population from 22 million to 35 million, an idea that is supported by Regional Development Minister Simon Crean – but opposed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

The Premier’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bob Carr, also said he’s opposed to bringing in an influx of immigrants to increase the country’s population. Karidis though said a greater population would improve the country’s economy and offset an aging workforce.

That means “jobs, investments, development,” he said, adding that, “The population is growing old, if we don’t renew our labor force, how are we going to pay for their retirement?” He made this declaration during a gala which was organized in his honor and took place in Adelaide, which many entrepreneurs and politicians attended.
