Kanis to Speak at Chios Fires Fundraiser

Jennifer Kanis, a new Labor Party Member of Parliament from Melbourne, hasn’t forgotten her family’s roots on the island of Chios, where she’s registered in the village of Volissos as Michaelia Kontantinou Kakani.

Kanis expressed her sorrow for the wildfires that broke out in Chios and caused major damage. Kanis’ father,  86, had worked as a hairstylist for many Hollywood celebrities before moving to Melbourne. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, but his parents and his siblings were born in Volissos. Kanis’ mother is of Italian origin.

The Chios Association in Australia launched a fundraiser to help Chios recover from the fires that cut deeply into the Mastiha tree industry. The group’s President, Pantelis Kolokythas said that Kanis will be invited to the coming Pan-Australian gathering of Chiotes to take place on the Gold Coast. Kolokythas said that the fundraiser was initiated by the Chios Association of New South Wales, Agia Markella and is planned to expand across Australia.
