Comino’s Passion for Return of Parthenon Marbles

Emanuel CominoThe Chairman and Founder of the first committee in the world for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Hellas, Emanuel Comino, made a strong plea for the British Museum, where they are housed, to return the stolen goods to Greece.

Comino, from Sydney and Chairman of the International Organising Committee – Australia – for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles captivated an audience with his passionate and interactive presentations at two events, at the Gold Coast Council Library and at the Greek Community Hall of St. Anna.

The lectures centered on the history of the Parthenon, its sculptures and how it was desecrated with the removal of its classical art pieces 200 years ago by Lord Elgin, a British diplomat. Comino depicted the story of humanity and ancient Hellenism.

His presentations also included details from his recent attendance at the International Colloquy in London; his visit to Johannesburg to meet with a fellow Hellene and prominent human rights lawyer George Bizos, who had represented Nelson Mandela, and who accompanied Comino to London to speak at the Colloquy.

He also talked about the Parthenon replica in Nashville, Tennessee; the current expedition to raise the hull of the ship Mentor that transported some of the sculptures for Elgin to England in 1802 and sank off the coast of Kytheras. Initial funding for this archaeological survey was provided by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
