Greek TV has been full of Turkish drama series for the past three years. Countless productions have been broadcast and the Greek audience seems to follow the histories and passionate lives of the protagonists with much interest, despite calls from some in the Greek Orthodox Church and far-right groups not to watch them.
A recent Hurriyet Daily News report referred to the wide appeal Turkish TV series have on on Greeks who are showing showing interest in the Turkish language, culture and the local star system. “Greek audiences love Turkish actors such as Kenan İmirzalıoğlu, Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ and Beren Saat” reads the report.
According to the report, Greek audiences have learned everyday simple Turkish words, such as “How are you?” “Good morning”, “My dear” etc, by watching a number of series covering the daily TV programs, such as Asi, Sila, The Magnificent Suleiman, Starfish and Tulip Age.
“Greeks generally say that they do not see very many differences between themselves and Turkish people. They also say the Turkish TV series remind them of family life in their own” reports the daily citing a Greek restaurant owner who finds Turkish actors talented and became interested in taking Turkish lessons in the future.
Hurriyet also noted that the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party leader Nikos Mihaloliakos has a negative attitude toward the shows that have been critically applauded but also blasted by some. More Greek stations are turning toward buying programs to reduce the cost of producing them.
