Greek-Australian Customs Officer Faces Drug, Bribery Charges

A Greek-Australian customs officer working at Sydney Airport, Paul John Katralis, 25, was arrested by federal police agents and is now facing drug trafficking and bribery charges. Authorities said he tried to import 14 kilos of pseudoephedrine, a stimulant used to make methamphetamine.

Police said Katralis collaborated with two drug couriers to try to sneak the drug through the airport where he worked. On Aug. 25, several days after Katralis’ arrest, customs chief Michael Carmody announced his resignation, saying he was upset that the facility was being used by drug couriers.

Katralis is facing charges of importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled precursor, receiving a bribe as a Commonwealth public official and abuse in public office to gain an advantage, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
