N.Y. Greek Cultural Center Honors Late Theo Angelopoulos

The Greek Cultural Center, in collaboration with the New York Film Academy and Cineaste Magazine, will present a tribute to the memory of internationally-acclaimed Greek filmmaker Theodoros (Theo) Angelopoulos. Reconstruction, his first feature film released in 1970, will be screened.

The film will be introduced by Dan Georgakas, a long-time editor of Cineaste magazine, consultant to the New York Greek Film Festival, editor of a Greek cinema issue for the Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora. A question and answer session will follow.

This program is made possible in part with public funds from the N.Y. State Council on the Arts, an SAS Program and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and with the support of the Queens Borough President’s Office, Material for the Arts, and the NYC Departments of Sanitation & Education.

Angelopoulos died in January, several hours after being involved in an accident while shooting his latest film, the final part of a trilogy, The Other Sea, in Athens. He had been with his crew in Piraeuswhen he was hit by a motorcycle driven by an off-duty police officer as the filmmaker, then 76, tried to cross a busy road without wearing a special reflective uniform. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
