Former Victoria Premier Bracks Says Badounas Was Key

A Greek-Australian businessman appears to have played a significant role in convincing Steve Bracks to claim the leading position of the Victoria Labor party and becoming Premier after winning consecutive elections.

Bracks said it was Nickos Badounas’ backing and strong public support that played a big role in helping him gain the top spot in Victoria. It was spelled out in his autobiography, A Premier’s State – Steve Bracks. The former political leader said Badounas is continuing to support him.

Bracks resigned in 2007 after serving for eight years, saying he could no longer give 100 percent to the job after he had refused to back a federal government water conservation plan and his son was involved in an accident involving a charge of drunk driving. He is now a member of the Boarding Council of the Hellenic Beirut Bank among other activities.

In his book, Bracks gives insights into how to run a government and manage the factions, and talked about everything from the impact of public life on his family, to forming a minority government with independents.
