Banned from Coast, Greeks Buying Inland Turkish Property

Banned from buying land and properties along the Turkish coast, Greeks are hurrying to purchase inside the country as far as the central region. Since the May 18 implementation of a new real estate law, Germans have been scooping up land while Russians are buying apartments along the Mediterranean Sea, the newspaper Hurriyet reported.

Greeks have been left to seek lands and properties away from the coast, a decision that has ired even some Turks who want their political leaders to explain as relations between the countries had improved markedly in recent years and Greece supports Turkey’s bid to become a member of the European Union. Under the Reciprocity Law, citizens from 183 countries have made 907 purchases of unlimited real estate in Turkey.
