Australia No Paradise for Many Greeks Living in Poverty

While many Greeks view Australia as a place to begin a career and life anew and flee Greece’s economic crisis, many Greek-Australians are living in extreme poverty, according to an article in the Neos Komsos newspaper.

The sad truth was verified by Labor MP Steve Georganas who explained that, “It’s an every-day phenomenon to see desperate Greek-Australians knocking on my door asking for help either because they were thrown out of their house or because they can’t afford to pay their rent or other reasons related to their financial situation.”

He said that it’s “A common belief is that the Greek Community is a wealthy community and we often hear success stories of our Greek compatriots that create this delusion. That’s not how it goes, however. Behind the story of one successful Greek-Australian businessman are the stories of hundreds of our compatriots living in poverty,” he noted. Dimitris Bouras, a social worker of the Greek-Australian community services agency in Melbourne, said that he comes across at least 10 Greeks monthly in need of financial aid.
