Austrian Newspaper Kurier Features Karpathos Island

The Austrian Sunday newspaper Kurier featured a report on Karpathos island praising the island’s natural beauty, just a few days after the paper recommended that Austrians should visit the island of Lefkas, as well as the seaside town of Preveza.

The story noted that, “Karpathos is Austrians’ favorite island where everything is functioning just fine and nothing proves to be true in regards to terrifying reports on reportedly existing lacks in electricity or empty supermarkets.” On the contrary, the editor stressed that the islanders are quite polite and hospitable.

The financial crisis may be obvious in Athens but Karpathos is far from it, and the reporter – who is spending his vacation on the island – said that he feels safe and is seeing the real Greece, not the one being broadcast around the world.

“We are pure and honest people, we pay our taxes, and it is infuriating that media and foreign politicians refer to Greece as being chaotic,” complained a local tavern owner. Another businessman, Manolis Nouarakis who owns a cafeteria on the island, added that “tour agencies did not inform their clients about major offers and discounts offered by Karpathos hoteliers to possible visitors” suggesting the agents took advantage of the lower prices to charge tourists extra. Kurier tries to present a more positive image of Greece, noting that it’s still a favorite spot from Crete to Corfu and on the mainland too.
