German Railroads Seek To Fill Vacancies with Unemployed Greeks

The German railroads lack trained personnel, therefore, they are seeking to hire people mainly from southern European countries.

According to Deutsche Welle, the German railroads in their efforts to hire trained personnel, are considering hiring young unemployed people from Greece, Spain or Portugal. We are considering going in this direction, Ulrich Weber, head of the German Railroads (Deutsche Bann) stated during an interview to the financial magazine Capital.

Through our subsidiaries abroad – Schenker Rail and Arriva, we are showing good spirit in order to accomplish this goal, and we are in the middle of conversations with our colleagues there in order to decide what we should do,” he stated.   However, no specific measures have yet been taken, Mr. Weber explained.

The German Railroads have noticed a reduction in new job applications, as the applicants are been offered other alternatives in the job market. We can easily see this, especially when it comes to trained engineers and train drivers. In areas such as Munich or Baden – Württemberg, we face major competition in our efforts to hire good trained personnel,” Mr. Weber stated.

Through the next ten years the German Railroads will be called to cover 80.000 job vacancies. The German Railroads are getting ready for a change in the policy of its personnel, which will consisted of more young unemployed people. “We have just agreed on a tighter national cooperation with the Federal Work office,” Mr. Weber said.

The German Railroads have already started an 80-day training program for the long-term unemployed, who could later be working in the railroads.
